Mise-en-scene of a film poster

This poster is from the film ‘Parasite’, which was released in 2019. It is a Korean film directed by Bong Joon-ho, the story wrote by Bong Joon-ho and Jin Won-han. This film has won 4 Oscar, which are best motion picture of the year, best achievement in directing, best original screenplay, best international feature film. Total 274 wins and 253 nominations.

From the poster we can see there are 5 people in there. We can clearly tell the man who is wearing all black is the main character, because he is in the front. He might be the villain because he is wearing all black, we often see villain wearing dark clothes. His clothes are like what middle class or officers would wear. Behind him there are two people lying on the deck chair. Bother of them are wearing white which seems like clean and innocent, also their clothes compare to the man who is wearing black looks more high quality. The lady is holding a glass of wine which also reflect that she is more likely to a high-class person. The man lying next to her, kind of shows their relationship which is pretty close, likely to be couple. The way the man lying down shows that he is quite confidence and comfortable compare the man wearing all black and standing there. Behind those two people, is a guy wearing jean jacket and black bottoms. From the way he dressed up might shows that he is younger than the other three people, more like a teenage boy. He is standing there awkwardly next to the door. Next to him is a little boy who is inside the house. There is glass in front of him, but we can tell that he is not wearing any dark clothes. There is a ball on the field which looks like is his ball. This also shows that the little boy lives in this house so he might be the son of the couple. In the very front of the poster, there are legs but not the whole body, which gives a feeling that the person is dead. This makes the whole film looks like a thriller movie. All the characters have no emotions on their faces which give a cold and scary feeling.

On all the character’s eyes there are lines, for the little boy and the couple they used white lines just like what they are wearing so we can assume that in the film they are one side. For the teenage boy and the old man, they used black lines covered up their eyes, black is also the colour that they are wearing. Covering eyes up give a mystery feeling and thriller. It feels like that none of them are good people. The tone of this poster is green, because they all on a field, also the glass of the building reflects and have the green tone. Green is very difficult to identify; green is giving a feeling of peace but because of the characters the whole poster doesn’t feel calm or peace anymore.

The setting of this film might be in the house that is in the poster, because all of them are in the back yard of the house. A ball on the field and from the reflection of the glass we can see there is a small tent on the field. The tent and the ball show that the house own by the little boy’s family. The tent might be a point of the film that is why they put it in the poster. The house in the poster is pretty modern and expensive from the looking. The poster doesn’t show a clear relationship between these people, apart from that I think the lady with wine and the man lying on the deck chair is couple and the little boy who is in the house might be their son, because he is wearing light colour shirt and inside the house not like the teenage boy who standing next to the door  awkwardly. The film will contain murder because of the legs at the left bottom. It is also about family because we can see the couple and the boy as a family appear on the poster. The story might be that the man and the teenage boy have bad relationship with the rich family, so they murder, because the man in black is not wearing anything fancy so I assumed he doesn’t live here, so does the teenage boy.

The font of the poster is not very regular, but it is also not curly or weird. The font is like the most formal and regular font but with a little bit decorate in it. The whole poster including the font gives a hint that the film is a bit double standard, such as black and white, regular neat font with extra decoration make it looks less formal, also the tone is in green not a warm colour but also not a cold colour that seems like it is an action or horror movie.

MY FAVOURITE FILM

 “Leon”

Leon: The Professional was released in 1994, by Les Films du Dauphin company. The film was directed by Luc Besson who had also directed: The Fifth Element, Lucy, La Femme Nikita. The film is about a girl named Matilda played by Natalie Portman and a professional assassin Leon played by Jean Reno. When Matilda was only 12 years old and she has already found out the dark side of life. Her father is abusive, and her mother neglects her. Her family got murdered by an agent, she decided to find Leon who lives down the hall. She joins Leon and study from him for she can avenge for her family.

Leon can be one of my favourite film. I watched this film quite early when I was about 13 years old and I watched it on my phone. At the first time I didn’t really understand the film, but the second time I watched it, I thought that is a very interesting movie. First is that the story is really unique and attractive. This is not like other film, talk about the relationship between family, couples, it is about a teenage girl and middle age man. The most part of why I like this movie is that the scenes, the screenshots of the movie just like art. Especially how they put the colours together. Also, there are many beautiful quotes in the film. I like to think after watching a film, I remember there is one quote, Matilda says, “Is life always this hard, or is it just when you're a kid?”, “Always like this.” Leon says. The quotes can make me think a lot and I think quotes are very important in a movie just like the lyrics in songs are important. Quotes can bring more colours into the film and make it more meaningful.

The actress who played Matilda, Natalie was only 11 years old and that was her first movie. There are smoking scenes in the movie, so Natalie’s parents were worry about her, so they worked out a contract with Luc Besson there could only be five smoking scenes in the film, Portman would never be seen to inhale or exhale smoke, and Mathilda would give up during the course of the film. When the film was first tested in LA, the version that was screened included a short scene where Mathilda asks Léon to be her lover. However, the audience became extremely uncomfortable and began to laugh nervously, completely destroying the tone of the film. The film received terrible test scores at the screening, and as such, producer Patrice Ledoux and writer/director Luc Besson decided to cut the scene for theatrical release.

I really do recommend this film, I think this is not only just a classic film that people say you should watch it because it is famous, also the meaning and the message in the film is what I like about it. The actors were very professional, and as I said the story is very unique.
